What exactly is autism? How does it differ from Developmental Delay?
While autism is a spectrum and people with a diagnosis vary significantly in how the symptoms affect them, they typically have difficulties in three key areas:
- Verbal and nonverbal communication
- Social awareness and interactions
- Imaginative play (variable interests and behaviors)
People with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have a “scattered profile” which means they do not follow the same patterns of development as typical children.
Developmental Delay (DD) means milestones are being met later than would be expected, but are happening in the same order as most children.
Early intervention, including early introduction to the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), is known to help children with ASD or DD make significant gains. Keep in mind though, it’s never too late to make a difference and instruction in functional life skills for anyone, regardless of their diagnosis, will improve their quality of life.
We have a variety of training workshops that provide practical information and strategies to help you teach important skills and increase appropriate behaviors as well.
